Cash for Clunkers

The Car Allowance Rebate System, better known as 'Cash for Clunkers' was one of the few federal programs that had an almost immediate positive impact on the US economy in 2009. The $3 billion program gave $3,500 to $4,500 to people if they traded their older, less fuel-efficient vehicles for newer, more fuel-efficient ones in the hopes of stimulating the economy, reducing overall fuel consumption and cutting CO2 emissions. Under the program, some 700,000 new cars were traded for an average fuel economy gain of 9 mpg. (Photo: billaday via flickr/Creative Commons)
