I am generally okay with the idea of scientists taking advocacy roles as long as there is transparency. Science should, by definition, be objective. But advocating for a particular ecological, political, or social outcome using scientific data is okay. The problem arises when scientists’ advocacy gets in the way of scientific inquiry, as was the case with the CRU and the “Climategate” emails.

One can be a producer of food, clothing and shelter, thereby increasing the standard of living for all men, or he may be a parasite, living from the output of those who work to produce our necessities. Before you decide that producers should be hobbled for the benefit of a view of the earth more to your liking, consider the severe price you exact on those you are condemning to live with cold, hungry, and ill-clothed children, deprived of the same education and future of your own children. Choose carefully between the religion of “Earth”, or the God of little children.

Of all industries, this is one that should be done in other countries. They have cheaper mountains anyway, and keep America beautiful.

great article, thank you for this good coverage.

yes, i think people need to realize that science is for a purpose: to understand things better (whether it be the environment, medicine, or climate) so that we can make better decisions. it is part of the responsibility if scientists, i think, to help bring deeper knowledge on a subject to the general public and advocate for smart decisions.

thank you for this piece, Dave.
