Jane Jacobs
Jane Jacobs is a hero of the urban renewal movement. Her book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, which advocated dense, mixed-use, walkable cities as opposed to the closed-off suburbs springing up in the 1950's. The city of Toronto honors Jacobs every year with Jane's Walks throughout the cities, and in 2008 the Rockefeller Foundation began awarding the Jane Jacobs Medal to award activists who's have a profound impact on positive urban planning.
