The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) which recently spearhead a massive plan to replace incandescent light bulbs with CFLs is also engaged in several other energy efficiency programs including an energy star program. The energy star rating program has been quite a success with consumers choosing more efficient appliances.
One of the main features of the star rating program was that it was not imposed upon the electronics manufacturers but was progressively introduced into the market. Initially displaying star ratings on appliances was not mandatory but considering the increasing attraction of consumers towards efficient appliances companies started displaying the ratings on their products.
The BEE has realized that in order to bring real and sustainable changes in the energy use patterns of the domestic and industrial users, it must work with the market. Public-private partnership is extremely essential in order to implement large-scale programs such as the Bachat Lamp Yojna.
By inviting private investors to be a part of such projects the government can not only reduce its monetary burden, but can also play a major role in stimulating the market of energy efficient products.
