In recent years, the use of a technique called hydraulic fracturing or "fracking" has opened up massive amounts of natural gas in North America -- gas that was previously unobtainable using traditional drilling and production methods. Despite industry assurances that it is safe and has a squeeky clean record, in places like Colorado, Wyoming, New York and Pennsylvania hydraulic fracturing has been the cause (or likely culprit) of instances of contaminated water from chemical spills, elevated levels of methane in drinking water and several instances of flammable water coming out of a faucet -- as this Daily Show clip also shows in this segment with Gasland director Josh Fox.
